ONTARIO HOLISTIC VETERINARY DIRECTORY
I have compiled a list of holistic minded healthcare providers for animals in Ontario. This list includes Doctors of Veterinary Medicine, Registered Massage Therapists, and Doctors of Chiropractics, to help provide you with options for your pets health care. The list is complied in alphabetical order by city, for your convenience.
I wanted pet owners to know that they have options when it comes to their pets healthcare. I would highly recommend a holistic minded veterinarian to all pet owners as their primary veterinarian. Holistic medicine emphasizes empathy, minimal invasiveness, proper nutrition, and avoidance of chemicals. The pet’s physical, mental, emotional well being, and environment are taken into consideration before treating an illness. Holistic medicine views the body as a whole, comprised of interconnected organ systems. Therapies offered by a holistic veterinarian can include, but are not limited to, orthomolecular medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, and osteopathy. Its important to note that all holistic veterinarians also have the knowledge of conventional medicine to be able to use or recommend when needed. To become a DVM in Ontario you must attend an accredited college of veterinary medicine which focuses on conventional medicine.
If you cannot find a holistic veterinarian in your city, consider making the trip to the closest one available for your pets yearly exam. If travel is not possible, consider a phone consultation with a holistic veterinarian. Many veterinarians will offer this service upon reviewing your pets medical records. Your pets medical records can be requested to be sent at anytime from your present veterinarian. Please note, in order for any veterinarian to be able to prescribe medication or recommend treatment they must have an existing valid veterinarian/client-patient relationship and therefore will require a physical examination in order to best provide treatment for your pet.
If you are traveling a long distance to a holistic veterinarian for your pets yearly exam, it is always great to develop a relationship with a local conventional veterinarian as well. You can use a local veterinarian clinic for unexpected medical needs, nail trims, any laboratory work or other diagnostics that are recommended by your holistic veterinarian. These two veterinarians can develop a relationship with one another where laboratory work and other diagnostics can be forwarded to your long distance veterinarian to provide the best care for your pets needs.
Practice of medicine can vary greatly, whether conventional or holistic i.e. recommendations for nutrition, vaccinations, medications prescribed etc. Please note, I am not specifically recommending any individual veterinarian on this list, as I do not know their individual values on medicine. This is why I promote pet owners to be their pets best health advocate; listen to your veterinarian recommendations, get a second veterinarians opinion if you feel more comfortable, research and educate yourself, and then make the most educated decision for your pet.
In good health,
